Inflation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Inflation - Essay Example Itââ¬â¢s a change expressed in percentage and compared over a time period. Economists have defined inflation as the sustained general increase in the price of goods and services1. When the prices goes up more money can only pay for fewer goods and services and the currency is said to have lost its purchasing power as the medium of exchange as well as the unit of account in an economy. When the prices goes up the situation is said to be price inflation while the money is in large supply the situation is referred to as monetary inflation2. Several other concepts are related to inflation such as deflation which refers to a fall in the price levels generally while disinflation refers to a rate decrease in inflation while hyperinflation is when the price increase is beyond control3. A general belief among economist is that inflation is caused by excess money supply in the economy which pushes demand for both goods and services. The measure of inflation is done through rating the increase in prices over a specified period of time. Inflation rate is expressed as a percentage and is calculated by working out the change in the price index and more so the consumer price index4. The price index on itself cannot give the rate of inflation but it becomes useful when calculating the inflation rate. This rate is the percentage change rate of price index over a period of time. To calculate the inflation rate the formula below is used The widely used examples of indices to calculated inflation include consumer price index (CPI) which measures change in prices of goods and services (in a fixed basket) purchased by a consumer5. This fixed basket has goods and services put together and are representative of the economy. The producer price index measures price change on average as received by domestic producers. It measures the price paid by producers. It differs from the CPIs in that

Philosophy of Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words
Philosophy of Law - Essay Example "What philosophy is, or should be, is itself a philosophical question that philosophers have understood and treated differently through the ages." (Wikipedia Philosophy p1). Philosophy can also be defined as a "doctrine: a belief (or system of beliefs) accepted as authoritative by some group or school; the rational investigation of questions about existence and knowledge and ethics; any personal belief about how to live or how to deal with a situation." (Princeton WordNet p1). The second of the above definitions lends itself to our thesis. 'Some group or school' could be analogous to the legal profession; 'doctrine' could be analogous to the law; 'personal belief about how to live' could be analogous to an individual's virtue, morality, and ethics; and 'deal with a situation' could be analogous to entering into a negotiable instrument such as a contract. This second definition mentions most of the issues that have given rise to a wide ranging concatenation of philosophical treatise and thought concerning the philosophy behind and used in the creation of a body of laws meant to guide the individual in their dealings both in rem and in persona. The philosophy of law could be said to trace its origins back before Plato and Aristotle established what contemporary society defines as virtue ethics (Wikipedia Philosophy of Law p1). ... Some of these social contracts could probably even fit today's UCC definition as "negotiable instruments" (Yovel 7). Whether these early contracts fit the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) is not the question. The question is whether engaging in the philosophy of law is more than just a mental exercise. Hence we must first become familiar with what is currently thought of as the philosophy of law and then use some specific case examples to validate the premise that it has relevance and should not be disparaged. Wesley Newcomb Hohfeld's analysis originally published as two articles in the Yale Law Journal in 1913 and 1917 and are "...now a standard part of legal thinking" (Walker, Oxford Companion to Law 575) is a starting point that appears to provide a reference plane from which we begin our familiarization with the philosophy of law. Hohfeld believed that philosophically, there were co-dependent and inter-related fundamental legal concepts. In his two papers he enumerated eight entities called jural correlates and jural opposites. "Hohfeld maintains that legal analysis is frequently muddled and inconsistent because of an improper understanding of the fundamental legal conceptions. His stated goal is to catalogue and clarify these conceptions. He asserts that there are eight such entities: right (claim), privilege (liberty), power, and immunity along with their respective correlates of duty, no-right (no-claim), liability, and disability. In addition, each fundamental conception is a jural opposite to another: privilege (liberty), right (claim), power, and immunity are the respective jural opposites of duty, no-right (no-claim), liability, and disability" (O'Reilly p1). Conflict theory Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Conflict theory - Assignment Example The class conflict theory notes that the society has been dominated by class antagonism and struggle over resources. The reason why I have liked the theory is that it highlights issues that continue to affect the modern society. For example, there has been a struggle for available resources in the current society such as employment opportunities, and other resources such as land and water. Hence, various argument presented in the theory are an explicit depiction of what is happening in the society today. Another example is on how capitalism continues to dominate the society. In fact, as it is those countries that have enormous resources continues to accumulate more and hence the increase of few rich people and at the same time vast population being poorer. Secondly, I like the concept that poverty in society is because of exploitation. I believe that there is no way one can accumulate resources if what rightful belong to them is taken by privileged in the society. Therefore, such an individual will not be able to get enough to sustain his/her life and life of those that solely depends on him or her. I also like this concept as it helps in highlighting ways that can be reversed to be able to reduce poverty and inequality in the society. There are different italicized key concepts that are applicable in my practice. One of the italicized key concepts is ideologies. The ideologies are described as oneââ¬â¢s idea that may lead to a certain ways of doing things. I believe this concept is applicable in my practice as I also have my own ideas that act as a guide to various things I do. The other concept that is applicable in my practice is on one-Dimensional Man. The concept argues that a man have been unable to maintain self through the influence of ââ¬Ëoutsideââ¬â¢ things such as technology. I identify with this concept as I have managed to embrace technology in various aspects of life. For example, currently, I use a modern

Soccer, The Golden Era - Research Paper Example All these attributes have been affiliated to the beautiful game of soccer since times immemorial. ââ¬Å"The 1960s was a golden era for soccer. Even better, it was when television coverage started to get serious, which means that 50 years later we can see the legends of the ââ¬Ë60s in all their glory on our laptops.â⬠("Total Soccer Show: 1960s Golden Era.") Soccer players like Pele dominated the world during the 60s and this was the era when they had reached their peak; the madness that followed with the pursuit of both playing as well as watching soccer had never been experienced before and was at its level best during this age, according to most people today. Brazil at the time had been producing some of the worldââ¬â¢s best soccer players with beautiful tactics, making the game a complete showmanship of entertainment. Players like Garrincha also carved their niche during this era, fooling the fullbacks of the opposition despite suffering from attention deficit disorder. One of the first soccer players to embrace the status of a superstar, George Best, also made his mark on soccer during this time; thus the period being rightfully called the golden age. English clubs like Manchester United were beginning to show the world what they were really made of, and soon after followed the diligence of clubs from Arsenal to Chelsea and Liverpool to Newcastle United. Competition grew not only around the world but within countries as well. In Portugal, Brazil, Spain etc, football began to take another shape altogether; South America at the time was the hub of enjoying the sport to the fullest, even though the rest of the world was hooked onto it as well. Every country, every club, every team as well as each and every player faced his own golden era during the three to four decades following the 60s. At the same time however, there were a number of countries were the sport was not followed at

Essay about a song Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
About a song - Essay Example The lines ââ¬Å"Winter is over, Summer is near,â⬠(Krall lines 3-4) etched its symbolism into my head as pictures and memories filled in my mind. The lines depicted the change of seasonsââ¬âfor me, it symbolized the amount of change that happened in my life from the age of eight. I decided then and there to pause for a moment and letting out a soft sigh, I let the memories of childhood come back to me. The song didnââ¬â¢t stop and continued to play in the once silent room. More of the lyrics struck me as it continued to play. Diana sang on, saying that ââ¬Å"I wished it would rain, washing away the sadness and tears,â⬠(Krall lines 14-15), whether she meant it literally or not, I interpret it in relation to childhood experiences. The lines could mean that sometimes, being a kid is about being happy and that there are times when a grown up misses the life where there were a lot less responsibilities. I may not be a full fledged grown up but I can relate to the song where there are times I wish I could go back the time when all I would worry about is what game to play with the other kids in the neighborhood; when all I would think about it enjoying a worry-free life. The water from the rain symbolizes the power of the rain to cleanse a certain itemââ¬âfor those who are not kids anymore, it is to forget the worries and responsibilities for a moment and return to a life of innocence even for the quickest time. This time around, the song was nearing its end when another couple of lines caught my attention, ââ¬Å"I stood there in the salt spray air,â⬠(Krall line 19) the salt spray air could symbolize the air by the salty seaââ¬âaccording to a Carl Jung, a psychologist, in dreams, the sea itself symbolized uncertainty and vastness (qtd in Spoinas). It can pertain to lifeââ¬âanyoneââ¬â¢s life, in general, where uncertainty is constantly present. Dangers and opportunities can be found in any corner and we are left
Comparison of the poems Half-caste and Not My Business Essay Example for Free
Comparison of the poems Half-caste and Not My Business Essay John Agard and Niyi Osundare have both written poems that protest about events or attitudes of people. Agard is From the Caribbean where the population is made up of people from lots of different races. Therefore he is used to being around people of mixed race and will know from first hand experience how horrible it can be to be called only half a person. Osundare has got a good point to make here which is that if people see something going on that is wrong but does not directly involve them, they should do what they can to stop the wrong doing rather than leave it as it may well be them someday and there could be no one to save them. You never know. The first poem is about the term Half-Caste which the poet: John Agard, objects to as he thinks that it makes us think of people of mixed race as only half a person instead of a whole person or individual. The next poem Not My Business is about the violence used by the state authorities against the people of Nigeria. The poet: Niyi Osundare believes that you should stand up for what is right, regardless of whether it bothers you at that specific time. Not My Business is said to echo this statement: First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me. The statement is by Pastor Martin Niemoller it is very much like the poem Not My Business not only because of what is said, but also because of how it is structured. In the first three stanzas what is happening is happening to someone else, not the narrator. However in the last stanza what is happening is happening to the person in the story, either I or the Narrator. In Half-Caste The poet want us to realize that the term is such a stupid one and he wants the people who use it to realize this and change their attitudes towards people of mixed race. Also the structure of the poem is good as he uses humour at the beginning to catch the readers attention and then explains the stupidity of the term. Osundare believes that it is peoples indifference and detachment from what is going on around them that is allowing the terror to go on. The repeated phrase about what business of his is it is indented which shows a distance from what is going on or a detachment. Agard writes phonetically as to the way he would speak the poem, it is one of those poems that needs to be spoken to get the full meaning. He speaks in a patois and uses calypso rhythm and rhyme, which is an example of how English and African dialects have combined and are now a key feature of the poets Caribbean culture. Not My Business uses a repeated phrase which is just saying What business of mine is it etc. This is also indented and therefore shows distance from what is going on in the paragraph. This use of language is a good way to show this distance. This poem says a lot about peoples cultures, not only Nigeria, but people are like this all over the world, and it says a lot that people wont stick up for what is right just so long as it does not bother them. Both of these poems had a lot to say and they have said it in a strong and down to earth kind of way. The first used humour to get peoples attention and then had a go about the term Half-caste. However the second just used three examples and then showed that a problem will get much worse if it is left and oppressive regimes are not nice things and people need to stick up and fight against them!
